Pirates of Penzance Playbill

This was the second year I took on the playbill for St. Ambrose Academy's annual Spring musical as a volunteer project. I was provided with the artwork for the cover (created for their advertising poster), client and family advertisements, and the copy for the various portions of the booklet, which was expected to be anywhere from 52 to 64 pages, dependent on advertising. Our timeframe for production was two weeks. For the cover, I modified the poster art slightly and added length due to its shorter ratio, blending the color and art into an old-fashioned seafaring map stock art. The back cover and inside covers, due to their being in color on heavier weight paper, I reserved for photos of the production and information and advertising for the school. For my font choices, I was particularly focused on a selection based on legibility at standard size in the lower lighting of a theater auditorium, with a wide variety of typefaces to differentiate headings and important information. I went with a standard Times New Roman for the primary body copy, using the various typefaces and all-caps to accentuate various aspects of the copy, to give it a clean, familiar look. The display font for the Title and page headers was Castellar, which gave off a very Victorian feel. The finished product was a 5.5 x 8.5", 56-page booklet, with 800 copies, with the outer cover sheet in color, the rest in black and white on 70# paper.
